Anywhere but the Stage: Dance Seeking New Locations

Sunday 6 March 2005, 10:3017:00
Rhoda McGraw Theatre, Woking

A thought provoking day bringing together national and international artists and scholars whose research interests focus on dance locations away from the theatre and the studio.

The symposium will include the presentation of papers, lecture demonstrations and some surprise performances to look out for!

Dance artists create work for an increasing diversity of locations such as prisons, factories, forests, power stations, climbing walls and businesses. New spaces have prompted new ways of looking at dance in relation to disciplines such as visual art, architecture, sociology and theatre. The move away from the theatre and the dance studio as performance and practice spaces opens new possibilities for creating and perceiving dance. Enquiries into emerging practices have made an impact on the way we view space and have challenged the boundaries of what constitutes performance.

Anywhere but the Stage will bring together leading dance artists and academics to discuss emerging practice and theories of site-specific dance. It will include, choreographer Carol Brown, visual artist Peter Freeman, Susanne Thomas (artistic director of Seven Sisters Group), Kate Lawrence (dance artist and lecturer at University of Surrey) and Fiona Wilkie (lecturer at University of Roehampton).
