Pain and Injury in a Cultural Context: Dancers’ embodied understandings and visual mapping

This brief talk will give an overview of a recently completed research project on dance injuries that was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The project involved in-depth interviews with 205 dancers as well as scanning the dancers’ bodies using a three dimensional body scanner that gives detailed body measurements and contoured images, as opposed to skeletal images. The dancers in the project mapped sites of pain and injury, strengths and weaknesses on to their scanned body image during the interview process. As well as describing the process, I will also discuss some of the findings from the analysis of the interviews and the scanning data.

Before the AGM, we will also provide a demonstration of how the body scanner works to a group of about 10 people at 5.30 pm. The scanner is housed in a room at London College of Fashion and because of space, this will have to be on a first-come-first-served basis. If you would like to see how the scanner works then please contact Lisa Jones by email preferably on l.t.jones@fashion.arts.ac.uk to book a place. If you do not have an email address you can contact Lisa on 0207 514 8433.
